SUMMARY

The Education practice at Wadhwani AI is focused on building high-impact ML-first digital tools that can be plugged into the existing digital and systemic infrastructure of public education in India. Our current work is focused on improving Language skills through assessment tools (such as an automated ORF assessment tool). We want to expand our ambit to cover all aspects of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy and help State governments achieve their NIPUN targets over the next few years. 
The Education Technical Advisor role is a 6-month contractual opportunity to build a robust academic repository of knowledge that can inform all product decisions that the education team makes, both strategically as well as in day-to-day operations.

Wadhwani AI is a nonprofit institute building and deploying applied AI solutions to solve critical issues in public health, agriculture, education, and urban development in underserved communities in the global south. We collaborate with governments, social sector organizations, academic and research institutions, and domain experts to identify real-world problems and develop practical AI solutions to tackle these issues to make a substantial positive impact.

We have over 30+ AI projects supported by leading philanthropies such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, and Google.org. With a team of over 200 professionals, our expertise encompasses AI/ML research and innovation, software engineering, domain knowledge, design, and user research.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Some specific deliverables are:

  • Enable the team to build a nuanced understanding of the complex landscape of public education in India through training and workshops
  • Compare and contrast different (National, State and International) competency frameworks for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy and create a version which Wadhwani’s education tools can be anchored to.
  • Build an internal repository of knowledge about how Foundational Literacy and Numeracy is acquired. Conduct internal training for the team on the same. 
  • Provide strategic academic inputs for the existing Oral Reading Fluency tool to make it more effective not just for improving Fluency but also for improving Comprehension
  • Provide academic inputs to help adapt the Oral Reading Fluency tool for different Indian languages like Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu, Malayalam and others. Potentially collaborate with the State Resource Groups for the same. 
  • Provide strategic academic inputs for potential tools being developed for Numeracy to ensure they are useful and impactful on the field.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor's degree from a reputed university is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Prior experience developing curricular materials, large-scale assessments, and teacher training materials, for public schools in FLN is required.
  • Prior experience delivering training either to teachers, mentors, or administrative officials is required. 
  • Prior experience implementing FLN programs on the field would be highly preferred. 
  • Classroom teaching experience in the primary grades, whether in public or private schools will be highly preferred.
